ATHENS RIVIERA, GREECE’S BEST KEPT SECRET

When most people think of Athens, they picture the Acropolis, ancient ruins, and maybe a quick stop before catching a ferry to the islands.

But what many don’t realise is that is that Athens has its own coastline — the Athens Riviera — where city life meets turquoise waters, hidden coves, and a slower, more relaxed rhythm.

I moved to the Riviera in the summer of 2024, and from the very first morning I knew this was exactly where I was meant to be. It’s where I sip my freddo espresso with the sound of the waves in the background, take evening walks by the sea, and watch sunsets that rival any island view.

The Athens Riviera isn’t just a stopover — it’s Greece’s best-kept secret, and the place I now get to call home.

  1. Where exactly is the Athens Riviera ?

Think of it as the coastal stretch that begins just outside the city’ running all the way down to Cape Sounion. It’s only 30 minutes from central Athens and the airport, which makes it ridiculously easy to get to. You don’t need a ferry or a long drive — just a short ride and the Acropolis is behind you, and the sea is right in front of you.

  2. Beaches you’ll fall in love with…

    Vouliagmeni Beach 💙

Organised’ easy’ and perfect if you like to have everything at hand — sunbeds, cafes, clear water.

    Astir Beach 💙

A little more glamorous. Think cocktails by the water, chic locals, and a stylish vibe.

    Hidden coves near Varkiza 💙

A favourite spot for a quiet swim, it feels like slipping into another world, just 20 minutes away from the city.

All these beaches are literally in my backyard… lucky 🍀 me

  3. The lifestyle & rhythm

Life here is slower — and I mean that in the best way.

People linger over coffee, spend hours chatting at seaside tavernas, and take their time. The ‘ dress code ‘ is what I like to call, casual chic : linen shirts, summer dresses, bare feet in the sand.

For me, it’s the balance I was craving — close enough to the city for culture, but far enough that I feel the sea breeze every day.

  4. Things to do besides the Beach

Lake Vouliagmenis : A natural thermal lake, perfect for a morning swim or a spa-like dip.

Cape Sounion : The Temple of Poseidon is breathtaking at sunset. Honestly, I never get tired of it.

Sailing & Marinas : Even just watching the yachts glide in is a little reminder of the Riviera lifestyle.

These aren’t just tourist spots for me — they’re the places I take friends when they visit, the little rituals that have become part of my life here.

  5. Where to stay : If you’re visiting, you’ll find boutique hotels and stylish Airbnbs in Vougliameni, and a few luxury resorts sprinkled along the coast.

But honestly, half the charm is waking up, walking to a cafe, and realising you don’t have to rush anywhere.

The beauty of the Athens Riviera is in its simplicity — long walks by the sea, fresh seafood with friends, sunsets that slow you down.

You don’t need a ferry ticket to experience it, just an open mind and a love for discovering new sides of Greece.

For me, it’s proof that sometimes the most beautiful escapes are closer than you think.

And that’s the magic of the Athens Riviera — it feels like a holiday, but for me it’s simply home.

From Athens with love,

Kati 💙
